Profiling
Idris® Technology is also a profiling technology and this enables the distinction between, for example, buses and trucks or a motor-home towing a car and the equivalent length and axle count articulated lorry (semi-trailer).
A high level scripting language has been developed to describe the inductive profiles of vehicles in a 'rule file'. Along with the necessary software components to read the rule file at system start-up, this approach allows suitably qualified engineers to adjust or change the profiles being determined, without changing the basic algorithm. This ability enables specific vehicles which have distinctive loop signatures to be identified, one use of this may be to identify fire trucks or dangerous chemical transporters for example.

Vehicle Priority
Environment and traffic congestion pressures could be eased on urban roads through the better use of our transportation systems. By decreasing the number of private vehicles on the roads, increasing the viability and attractiveness of the public transportation sector and giving priority to vehicles such as buses, congestion and pollution within cities could be reduced dramatically. To encourage commuters and the general public to make better use of the public transportation systems they need to become more efficient, timely and convenient - how is this achieved?
One of the Idris Technology applications enabling transportation systems to become more effective is Vehicle Priority (Vehicle Profiling). Vehicles are detected using the signatures from inductive loops, this message is then processed as described earlier by the Idris algorithms and passed on to the traffic controller. Using the standard Idris configuration with two loops per lane, any number of approaches can be monitored and once configured the system operates as a stand alone unit. It is also possible to initiate a vehicle violation trigger with the Idris Technology to discourage nonpriority vehicles from using the specified lanes.
Features
- Reliable separation of tailgating vehicles
- Distinguishes between buses and heavy goods vehicles without the need for a height sensor
- Recognises vehicle chassis features
- High accuracy in congested or free flow traffic
- High meantime between failures (MTBF) and low meantime to repair (MTTR)
Idris combines the reliability of loops with a technology and accuracy previously only attainable with multiple detection technologies, a profiling technology which is simple to setup and operate. All you need is a road - no gantries or further infrastructure are required. Idris is a robust reliable solution in all weather conditions and extreme environments, with no sensor beams to become obstructed with snow, rain or fog. Idris is able to use existing loops and traffic signal controllers and the system reliably separates and classifies 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
