Background to Idris Development

Background to Idris Development

Idris was originally developed to detect single stopped vehicles in the low flow traffic conditions typically encountered at off peak times. The technology has since developed and advanced into one of the world's most accurate vehicle detection systems. Over time, several new manifestations of the original Idris Technology have been generated taking the development team at DCS into new and expanding markets.

Automatic Vehicle Detection & Classification

Automatic Vehicle Detection & Classification

Idris uses inductive vehicle signatures to achieve its phenomenal detection accuracy. These vehicle signatures are also used to provide classification. Field experience has proved accurate vehicle classification of a wide range of vehicles including motorcycles, cars, pickups, trucks and commercial vehicles with three or more axles, consistently in all weather and traffic conditions.

Tolling

Tolling

Congestion is a common problem in many countries, road pricing is becoming a widely accepted solution and as a result the number of Tolls is growing around the world.  Idris addresses both these requirements in a single technology. Installations on live toll plazas and on test sites have demonstrated Idris' ability to separate and count vehicles accurately, distinguish between towing and tailgating, allocate vehicles to a toll class and pinpoint the location of front and rear license plates to initiate a photograph.

Automatic Vehicle Identification - Tag Reader Correlation

Automatic Vehicle Identification - Tag Reader Correlation

Idris is capable of highly accurate multi-lane tag correlation, due to its ability to track continuously the location of every vehicle as it passes through the detection site. Idris is 'spatially aware', being able to locate vehicles both in the direction of travel and laterally. This provides a system which is exceedingly accurate for Tag to Vehicle association.

Vehicle Enforcement

Vehicle Enforcement

Idris can trigger a Vehicle Enforcement System (VES) by a digital pulse or over a serial interface. The system provides accurate event identification to the lane controller for the trigger as well as vehicle data messages.  Idris ensures the lane controller has the right information to associate the correct license plate image to the relevant vehicle data.

Incident Detection

Incident Detection

Idris is able to perform all of the necessary functionality using only loop-based detection and has been designed from the outset to operate in a multi-lane environment, coping with vehicles straddling or changing lanes at speed or in stop/go traffic. The primary objective of the Idris AID system is to detect stopped vehicles in high-speed, free-flowing traffic - a situation in which accidents tend to be most serious.

Loop Technology

Loop Technology

Diamond Consulting Services Ltd (DCS) has been conducting research and development on enhancing the output of loop detectors through advanced signal processing techniques.  This work has resulted in the development of sophisticated algorithms. The output from these algorithms represents a quantum leap in the count and classification accuracy levels previously associated with loops. The Idris advanced technology accurately separates vehicles regardless of volume, speed or position on the road, in both constrained lanes (such as manual toll lanes) and multi-lane express lane environments.

Emergency Function

Emergency Function

The Idris Emergency Function System (EFS) was developed for use when evacuation or emergency situations arise, such as hurricanes or other adverse weather conditions.  The EFS provides real time information on traffic movement supplying individual vehicle speeds, counts and headway, all from standard inductive road loops.  This is a versatile system which is inexpensive and capable of being incorporated into existing Idris applications.  The Idris EFS could also operate as a high quality Incident Detection System for choke points in tunnels and on bridges.

Red Light & Speed Enforcement

Red Light & Speed Enforcement

The Idris® patented Technology is so versatile it can be implemented into a variety of applications from a single function system to multi tolling applications. The Idris speed detection system is a single function speed solution.  It’s capable of obtaining highly accurate speed data from standard loop sensors installed under the carriageway on a short base line. Idris Technology is an ideal and lane specific detection or trigger method for generic 35mm or digital camera enforcement systems.
