Idris Loops for Axle Detection

With the benefit of an R&D grant from the UK Government, Diamond Consulting Services (DCS) has further enhanced its idris smart loop detector technology to encompass vehicle axels. A combination of cost-effectiveness with a >99.97 per cent seperation accuracy, provides a complete Automatic Vehicle Classification (AVC) system.

Now with a special loop array per lane, Idris smart loops can incorporate optional axle detection and VES trigger output, providing a robust and reliable solution in all weather conditions. The system can detect the number of axles per vehicle, including distinguished dual tires, reliably separating, profiling and tracking each vehicle as it transits the toll plaza. An accurate trigger output to an external VES system can be provided to allow violators to be identified. Minimal maintenance requirements and a 10-year mean average between replacements turns the humble tried and trusted loop into a sophisticated ITS system, detecting vehicles in all traffic and weather conditions and with the ability to distinguish between tailgating vehicles and vehicles towing trailers.

Idris smart loops can reside on a higher level platform either as a dedicated processor or as a third-party lane controller, which can provide a multitasking environment. The output from specially configured detectors is scanned and analysed continuously to extract key features concerning vehicles’ characteristics and behaviour.

Performance and accuracy claims have been verified by independent trials conducted by CUTR on behalf of FDoT in April 1998.
