Testing times

Here at DCS we ensure, through rigorous research and development, that our technology remains as accurate and efficient as possible, whatever the conditions. So, earlier this year, we joined forces with two of our ITP's, Nortech International and American Traffic Systems, to undertake speed validation testing of Idris on 2 new platforms. The aim was to perform track based testing to determine the accuracy of Idris speed detection algorithms. Testing was also done to validate Idris complies with the UK Highways Agency's (HA) specifications, as well as DCS's own speed accuracy specifications.

Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground in Leicestershire UK, provided the location for the validation. New loop sites were installed, covering 2 lanes in a 2-mile track, to allow testing of vehicles at high speeds and straddling. The Nortech TD624 and ATS AXSIS SLS-100 platforms were validated against an independent speed reference device. This was locked to an accurate clock to allow results from both the reference device and Idris to be aligned for comparison and validation. The speed tests consisted of 10 runs at each speed and were defined as 20, 30, 40, up to 140 mph.

All data accrued during tests was recorded on site by a TÜV Product Service Ltd (TÜV) witness.  TÜV is an independent verification and certification centre based in the UK. The data collected provides a physical and non amendable record of all track information and is stored in archive at TÜV premises.

All tests on the Idris Speed Enforcement System indicated the system measurement accuracies were better than the specified Idris speed accuracy statement of:

  • +/- 2kph for speeds below 100kph (62mph) and
  • +/-2% for speeds over 100kph (62mph)

In addition the measurement accuracies were well within the tolerance requirements of the HA, HOSDB Publication No 15/05, listed as:

  • Positive error not greater than 2mph (or 3%, over 66mph)
  • Negative error no greater than 5mph (or 10%, above 66mph)

The advantages Idris provides to tolling applications are immediately available to the speed enforcement market: high accuracy in all weather conditions and low lifetime maintenance costs.
