Tampa Express Way - moving in the right direction

Since opening in July 2006, the Tampa Expressway has gone from strength to strength. A year after opening, it was awarded the prestigious IBTTA Toll Excellence International Presidents Award for its creative, innovative and positive toll project.

The reversible express lanes have been a great success, decreasing congestion and reducing commuters journey times by around 20-30 minutes each way. This time saving is set to improve further by the middle of 2010.

The entire expressway is to be converted to Open Road Tolling, eliminating all cash toll booths and moving to full electronic and video toll collection. Design is currently underway and the Expressway will be installing Idris as the base of the ORT AVC technology with Raytheon as the system integrator. This will result in 22 lanes of ORT with two sets of main line gantries (4 total) and 10 ramp gantries. From there Tampa will be looking to develop a new business approach including designing a new back office and processing package, a project we'll be following through it's development.
