In the early hours of September 18th, cash collection came to an end on the Selmon Expressway in Tampa, Florida. The dawn of a new era for all-electronic tolling (AET) had begun. AET is growing in popularity amongst tolling authorities across the world, largely due to the number of benefits AET offers not only to the tolling authority, but the customer. Benefits relate to safety, speed, environment and convenience. Safer tolling is achieved thanks to the elimination of toll plazas. The free flow of traffic saves not only time, but money for the fuel conscious driver. Environmentally the reduction in stop go traffic reduces emissions, and convenience for the driver is vastly improved thanks to on-line or phone payment.
